JBIMS AI in Microbiome Science Workshop- October 22nd  2025
Spencer gave a talk at the JBIMS “AI in Microbiome Science” workshop, an event designed to build skills and spark discussion around the use of artificial intelligence in microbiome research. Several members of the Diamond Lab also participated, contributing to conversations on applying computational tools to microbial datasets and emerging opportunities in AI-driven biology.
EMBL/EMBO Symposium: The Human Microbiome 2025 at Heidelberg Germany-September  2025
Carlos participated in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)/ EMBO Symposium: The Human Microbiome, held at the EMBL Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, Germany.
IGI Open House & Poster Session- October 21st  2025
IGI PIs and collaborators, highlighting exciting research across our community. Carlos presented a poster with some 2025 research updates.
JBIMS Industry Mixer- May  2025
This event, organized by the Joint Berkeley Initiative for Microbiome Sciences (JBIMS), brought together scientists, industry partners, and innovators working across the microbiome field in the Bay Area. Carlos presented a poster with some exciting research updates.
October 31  2024
🎃Halloween🎃!! we got together with the Banfield and Firestone labs for a Spooky Happy Hour👻.
October 31  2024
Pengfan, Carlos and Rebecca, presented a poster during the Inside IGI Climate Change conference to showcase the potential microbial targets for rumen microbiome manipulation to mitigate methane emissions.
September 2–6  2024
Rebecca and Spencer attended the International Symposium on Plasmid Biology in Hamamatsu, Japan, narrowly dodging Typhoon Shanshan.
August 18-23  2024
Cape Town, Africa. Pengfan presented a poster during the ISME 19 conference to introduce his work on elucidating rumen microbial shifts in the cows whose methane production was suppressed by the feed additive with red seaweed.
In September, Carlos attended the EMBL/EMBO Symposium on the Human Microbiome in Heidelberg, Germany. He presented a poster on our latest work examining the inflammatory potential and stability of infant-derived in vitro gut microbiome communities, which sparked strong interest and valuable feedback from colleagues. The symposium also provided a great opportunity to connect with researchers and exchange ideas with close collaborators— including Holly Steininger from the Lynch Lab, who appears in the photo — while engaging with the international microbiome research community.
On August 22nd, we hosted our annual Diamond Lab barbecue in Emeryville, a chance to celebrate the year’s milestones and spend time together outside the lab. Friends, family, and collaborators joined us for great food, sunshine, and plenty of laughter. It was a special afternoon to recognize everyone’s hard work and enjoy the community that makes our lab feel like home.
We love taking time to celebrate together — birthdays, milestones, and the wins that make our work meaningful.
Our people are truly the heart of the Diamond Lab!!
